What Roe v Wade Really Means

In the aftermath of the Supreme Court leak regarding Roe v Wade, it becomes more important than ever that we show up at the polls to protect our rights. We can no longer rely on the Supreme Court, and more and more, we can’t rely on currently elected officials.

According to a leaked document that was reported by major news outlets, Roe v. Wade is going to be overturned by the Supreme Court. On May 8th, it was announced that the Senate was going to combat this by passing an abortions rights bill that guarantees a woman’s right to an abortion, according to Reuters, and this might be the only right course of action for liberals, progressives, and libertarians have at their disposal. And yet, the measure was reported to have failed in the Senate, reported by Politico.

There are very few avenues pro-choice activists can take when a Supreme Court ruling is in mind. However, legislation passed by Congress and signed by the President is a good way to combat a Supreme Court ruling. Even now, with the Senate bill that has failed, the best avenue for liberals to take is to make another bill and get it passed in both houses of Congress. Just because one motion dies does not mean that a similar motion will fail. According to Politico, In fact, it's probably the one way to do so on the federal level.

Pro-choice activists must first realize one thing: the fight is not over. If they give up right now, the years of combating abortion restrictive legislation would have been for nothing. There is still hope with this new bill in the Senate, and right now, what pro-choice activists can do is put pressure on politicians to pass this bill through the Senate, the House, and the White House. The faster this measure passes, the fewer time conservatives and so-called "pro-life" activists have to combat it. Right now, the passing of this bill matters more to the pro-choice movement than the Supreme Court Ruling, and it should be the top priority of the pro-choice movement if they want to protect women's rights.

Conservatives try and paint an image that women are getting abortions left and right because they choose not to use sex protection, but the reality is far different and more upsetting. According to Science Vs., the majority of women who get abortions are women who can't afford to raise children, and the second-largest group of women who get abortions are women who can't physically go through pregnancy. If women are forced to give birth, the US will see the wealth gap increase and the number of women dying during pregnancy increase as well. In their fight against abortion, conservatives forget the reason why Roe V. Wade was passed in the first place.

According to NPR, before abortion was legal, women got abortions from ill-equipped doctors or people with little medical background. Because of this, many women would die during the procedure, and Roe V. Wade was passed to protect the lives of these women. As such, the question of whether abortions were morally right or wrong was not a question the Supreme Court considered. The only question that was on the Supreme Court's mind was how to protect the women who were getting abortions. If such protections were removed, abortions will become unsafe, and women’s lives will be put at risk. And regardless of what conservatives would have you believe, the majority of people getting abortions are normal, everyday citizens and not the devious criminals they paint them as. Going off this logic, if conservatives were truly pro-life, they would be advocating for the Supreme Court to uphold Roe V. Wade.

Studies have shown that the majority of Americans are in support of a woman's right to choose. And the defeat of the abortion rights bill show which major US political party is in favor of a woman's right to choose. With the midterms coming up, this is the perfect time to combat the issue. By far, the best avenue liberals and progressives can take to combat the Supreme Court ruling is to vote in the midterms and put in candidates who support women’s right to choice. It is the only way to guarantee that certain freedoms are going to be protected. Vote out those who would seek to keep women from taking control of their own lives. Advocate for another abortion rights bill to pass through Congress and be signed by the President.

The amount of lives that are going to be put at risk if abortion rights are restricted or taken away is far more concerning than pondering the question of whether a fetus is alive. Liberals and progressives must show up to the polls during the midterms and vote out those who are in favor of the Supreme Court ruling. If Americans truly care about their rights being taken away from them, they have to show it in their votes. And if the Democratic Party hopes to attract more liberals to the polls, they have make their stance and solution to this problem clear. The Blue Cavalry will be publishing further updates on this story and will continue voicing its approval and strategic thoughts in further articles.
