We Should Replace Biden in 2024

by Danny Solorzano

If Progressives and Democrats want to keep the Presidency, we need someone else to run. This is especially true if we want a President who will actually get something done on the issues that matter most.

According to AEI, a recent poll shows that most Democratic voters want another Democratic nominee to run in 2024 instead of current Democrat president, Joe Biden. The poll cites the economy and President Biden’s performance as the top reasons why voters want someone to run in 2024. And if the Democrats are hoping to keep voter turnout, perhaps they should consider another presidential candidate.

Democrats are entering into the 2022 midterms with the huge possibility that they will face defeat and lose the Senate and perhaps the House. And the reason why is clear: voters blame Biden for the current state of the economy, and even more voters are dissatisfied with Biden’s performance. And with The Guardian reporting his failure to get Saudi Arabia to increase oil output to the US, it’s not hard to see why.

Biden is a president who has promised a lot. After the shooting in Uvalde, a crowd of disgruntled people shouted at the president to do something, to which he responded he will, as reported by The Independent. And yet, at the time this article was written, Congress has made no significant progress with gun reform. Also, Congress has failed to pass a minimum wage increase, student loan forgiveness, universal Pre-K, and increased access to government-subsidized healthcare.

All of these things were on Biden’s agenda and have not been accomplished. And while many Biden supporters point the finger at Senators Manchin and Sinema, Biden’s failure to bring the party together on these critical issues is a reflection of his performance in the White House.

The Democrat Party has always been accused of being a party that talks a lot and does very little. Having Biden in the White House has only furthered that belief. Many Democrats, however, are concerned with the thought of replacing Biden mainly because Democrats don’t know who would take the mantle from Biden if they consider pulling him from the 2024 race.

A lot of Democrats look to Vice President Kamala Harris as a possible successor, but Harris’ poll numbers are no better than Biden’s. 52 percent of voters disapprove of Harris’ performance as Vice President, according to FiveThirtyEight. Having her run as a presidential candidate in 2024 might mean further disaster for Democrats.

Leftist Democrats point to Senator Warren and possibly even Senator Bernie Sanders. However, it is unlikely they will do any better than Biden with voters, as most voters believe someone younger should take the mantle of president. Therefore, it’s clear. Voters want a younger face to take the mantle of President. But who should it be?

Some Democrats believe it should be California Governor Gavin Newsom. The governor has remained popular with California voters despite his scandal during the COVID pandemic. Others think it should be Secretary of Transportation Pete Butteigeg, and some believe it should be Stacy Abrams.

Whichever candidate hopes to replace Biden with, it’s clear the voters want someone younger who can perform the job of the presidency in a more efficient manner. However, it's not just a younger candidate that voters want.

According to Data For Progress, voters want a candidate who is more progressive and action oriented than Biden. They want a president who will not shy away from the main issues (such as wealth inequality, lack of access to healthcare, and gun control) that are plaguing the US. More voters are pondering why they have to pay more for healthcare than residents in England and Canada. Others are considering why billionaires pay little in taxes.

These are the issues that Americans care about and want resolved instantly. They need a president who will act on these issues and act fast.

The consensus is clear. A younger candidate could steer the Democrats onto a course that is more favorable to voters. However, the candidate also has to be a person who can keep their promises and pass effective legislation on key issues. If such a candidate does not step up during the 2024 election cycle, the Democrats run the risk of potentially losing the 2024 presidential race, especially if the Republicans choose to run a different candidate than Donald Trump.

Right now, the Democratic Party has two choices: to stick with a moderate and risk-free approach that has gotten them nowhere with voters or to take the more risky approach that could potentially pay off in the next presidential election.

More voters are embracing progressive ideas. And if the Democratic Party want to keep voters are their side, and away from the party that embraces insurrectionists, rioters, and domestic terrorists, they have to embrace the progressive wing of their own party.
