The Importance of the Georgia Election Probe

by Danny Solorzano

In the aftermath of the 2020 Presidential election, Donald Trump asked the Georgia Secretary of State to “find” him votes. The Secretary declined. What’s more, he recorded Trump’s felnious request. If the Georgia Probe does find grounds for charging Trump, Traditional Republicans, the so-called Never-Trumpers, may be able to keep Trump out of national political office.

On the 5th of July 2022, a Futon County grand jury subpoenaed Rudy Guilliani, Trump’s former lawyer, Senator Linsdey Graham, and conservative lawyer John Eastman, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. As stated by Reuters, the next day, Linsdey Graham announced his decision that he would not be complying with the Georgia probe subpoena and urged the others to do the same.

And while Senator Graham might have his own opinions about the Georgia Election probe, he and other conservatives can not argue its significance.

Back in 2020, then President Trump urged Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to “find him 11,780 votes”, according to CNN. This conservation took place via phone call, which Rafensperger recorded. It was one of the core reasons why Trump was impeached the second time with the other being his involvement in the January 6th insurrection. That phone call conservation led to this specific grand jury investigating Trump and his allies for their alleged attempt to overturn the election results in Georgia.

The primary reason why this probe into Trump’s action in Georgia is so significant is that this marks the first time in US history that a state has to look into the actions of a president and determine if what he did was criminal or not.

Democrats have argued that Trump’s conversation with Rafensperger was enough evidence to prove he committed a crime. And while Trump’s discussion with Raffensperger was damaging to the former president’s reputation, there is still more in the Trump campaign that needs to be investigated.

According to The Guardian and Forbes, The Trump campaigns in 2016 and 2020 have been accused of foreign ties to Russia, money laundering, and other possible crimes. Trump himself has been accused of many crimes such as tax avoidance, sexual misconduct, and now attempting to overturn an election. And while Trump has managed to slip through the cracks and has not been found guilty of any crimes by any government entity, this Georgia election probe might be what finally gets him.

It's a red state that is investigating Trump. It’s no longer New York, a blue state, or the US Democratic-lead House of Representatives. People who voted for Trump in 2016 are leading this investigation. If a state like Georgia is turning against the figurehead of the Republican Party, it could be the catalyst that Never-Trumpers need to finally rid Trump as the spearhead of the Grand Old Party.

Further, Never-Trumpers can use this Georgia Probe as evidence that Trump is losing his footing with voters. If Trump is found guilty, it’s further evidence that the man should not be allowed to run for the Republican 2024 presidential nominee. It also serves as further evidence that Trump actually is what Never-Trumpers say he is: a liar, a criminal, and a mockery of the GOP.

Trump narrowly lost Georgia in 2020. Having him run again in 2024 might mean another disastrous loss for traditional Republicans in Georgia. Never-Trumpers can hone in on the fact that Trump is losing touch with voters and turning states like Georgia blue as a result.

If this probe finds Trump guilty of attempting to overturn the election, he will lose the love of Republican voters in Georgia. Earlier this year, Trump ran his own candidate, David Perdue, against Brain Kemp for the Republican Governor Nominee in 2022. According to MSNBC, Perdue suffered a horrible loss, only pulling in a fraction of the voters Kemp received. It goes to show that Georgians have more love for the Republican Party than the former president.

If Trump runs again after being found guilty by the probe, he will lose Georgia and possibly other swing states.

According to Newsweek, the Georgia election probe is already affecting his polling numbers against possible 2024 Republican presidential nominee and current Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, and the jury has not yet found him guilty of any wrongdoing. Therefore if Democrats and Never-Trumpers really want to get rid of Trump once and for all, this investigation in Georgia might be just what they need.

Right now, the fate of the Republican party may rest in the hands of the Georgia election probe. Because its outcome might decide whether or not Trump becomes Joe Biden’s rival in the 2024 election. The Blue Cavalry will update its readers on further progress in this story.
